A sea kayak that tracks cleanly on flat water and carves eagerly on edge is a genuinely useful combination for paddlers who want one boat that handles both the mileage and the fun. At just under 16 feet, the Volan 158 is the shorter sibling in the Volan lineup, and its narrower 21.7-inch beam makes it a particularly responsive fit for smaller paddlers or anyone who prefers a more connected feel underfoot.

The hull geometry is purposeful throughout. Bow rocker and volume keep the ride dry across varying conditions, while the shaped bow deck sheds water efficiently and resists purling on choppier days. The bow deck structure is also engineered for stiffness during deep water rescues, which matters when you're far from shore on a Canadian lake or coastal route. The low rear deck supports easy rolling and re-entry, and the paddle shaft recess gives you a solid bracing point when climbing back in.

Storage is practical and well-distributed, with large bow and stern hatches, a day hatch for quick access, and an optional bow mini hatch. Full deck lines and elastics handle the rest. Available in five layups, the Ultralight build starts at a remarkable 34 lb, making this one of the lightest capable sea kayaks you can put on the water.

Performance Layup

The deck and hull of this construction are laid up by hand with polyester resin brushed into the weave.

Our Performance layup uses a Kevlar/Diolen weave to add a touch more impact resistance over our Classic layup, as well as give a pleasing golden shimmer to the inside of the kayak. This is also the entry point to P&H Custom, and presents great value with the option to select from our full range of options.
